Star of Indiana easily defeated five other corps here tonight. Attired in their beautifuI new British uniforms, Star's 70 brass thrilled the crowd as they came off the line with William Walton's powerful composition Henry V. Their second number, Song Without Words, was serene with guard members using pretty flags containing four pastel flowers. The mood became more festive with Fantasia On The Dargason, which had the audience clapping in unison. The closer, Crown Imperial, was most majestic and inspiring, and when the huge gold flags quickly appeared at the back of the field, the audience became so excited they shot to their feet. Star's score tonight was 67.30. |

As Star of Indiana was announced. someone next to me said, "Is that Star?" A major uniform change for Star makes it a little harder for their fans to recognize them. They have bright red British-style coats with diagonal plaid sashes, white pants and black shakos with red plumes to complete the outfit. The guard is divided into two visual elements as half is attired in Scottish-style kilts and the other half in striking red coats with black pants. Even the drum major is a Highland Lass. Star opens with Henry V and segues into a company front fanfare which literally lifts the audience out of their seats. The redcoat guard uses brightly colored shields at the beginning then switches to red heraldic flags which compliment the yellow ones flown by the Highland group. A gorgeous soprano solo moves the corps into an English garden as the guard brings out beautifuI green and multicolored flower flags. A fast moving drill during the percussion feature almost has the corps running. The guard dances a Highland fling, twirls sabers and tosses giant batons. The closing of Crown Imperial has a wonderful big brass sound and huge waving purple and gold flags. The Bloomington, IN, corps has a great start on the season with their second-place finish of 72.80. |

The British are coming in the form of Star of Indiana. With a show that is somewhat like the old 27th Lancers and other traditional corps, Star has again established a definite and quite pleasing theme show. Their opener of Henry V was especially strong, as was the ever popuIar Crown Imperial that they use in closing out the show. An interesting change of uniform from past seasons to this one and British coats of arms placed around the field helped establish the very British atmosphere. Their final score was a 75.30 for second place and only 0.2 of a point off in brass GE. |

Star of Indiana swept into town and stunned the crowd with a second-place victory over Blue Devils, with a score of 75.00. Star's brand new, more-than-mighty 1989 show is a sweeping, classical British program that reminded several in the crowd of an updated 27th Lancers' show. Starting with Henry V, the powerful horn line set the crowd back in their seats with traditional long, building chords that brought the sound decibel level to new heights at Spartan Stadium. Star's guard moved from flowered flags to gleaming scepters and provided a visual backdrop that complemented the musical selections. Star will be making a strong bid for a top spot in Kansas City and definitely has a show capable of taking them there. |

We are not sure what prompted Star of Indiana to undertake the long journey to the Northwest, but we are certainly glad they came. The music is Henry V, Song Without Words, Dargason and Crown Imperial. The drill is fastpaced with constantly flowing forms, company fronts and more symmetry than is the current norm for DCI. Plenty of flashy flag work in the guard involves splashes of color contrasting with the corps uniforms. All of this integrates perfectly with the classic British music. Considering the difficulty of the presentation, Star's execution was remarkably sharp for this early in the season. Star does not appear to be suffering any ill effects from their extended bus odyssey. |

Coming in a close second to the Blue Devils for the first time this year was Star of Indiana (79.30). Their 1989 production is exquisitely performed and is musically breathtaking. The British theme is carried out nicely through the music, as well as the red and white uniforms with a touch of tartan plaid. The 70-member horn line is extremely powerful, yet plays delicately and emotionally.
Their opening number, Henry V,moves well and shows the versatility of the 29-member color guard. All sections complement each other well, and the percussion line is exceptionally strong and has carried this caption over Blue Devils. Todd Ryan, who also writes for Madison, has done a wonderful job with Star's drill as the forms flow and move smoothly without giving the show a cluttered look. Star of Indiana was by far the crowd favorite tonight and is sure to have their best showing at championships this year. |

Star of Indiana came on last with an exciting show with non-stop movement. Henry V, in their all-British repertoire, is a dramatic opener. Song Without Words provides a soft contrast followed by Dargason which really shows off the whole corps. Dargason starts with a percussion feature, and then the brass begins to assert itself. The guard provides the colors to contrast the corps' basic black, white and red. The brass and guard divide as half plays and marches the quick tempo of the main melody while the other half plays and marches the slower Greensleeves melody. The effect is an exciting tension resolved in the final crescendo. Closer of Crown Imperial is much like the opener, dramatic with bold brass statements. Star continues to amaze the drum corps world by completely changing their style each year and yet improving on their already excellent placing at DCI. Star of Indiana scored 82.20 for a first place tie with the Blue Devils in open class. |

The seemingly effortless way the Blue Devils traditionally perform jazz can also be said of the way Star of Indiana sails through extremely intricate and difficult music by Walton and Holst. This precise style of playing is a perfect fit for Star as they sound more like a professional symphonic band. Continuing their high percussion marks from the West Coast tour, Star handily took that caption tonight with a solid 13.20 in performance. Executing in top form, Star's show has difficulty, majestic sound, style and beauty. Sir William Cook (and Walton) can be very proud. |

In front of an enthusiastic hometown audience, the Star of Indiana narrowly edged the Blue Devils to capture the first DCI Mid-America regional title. For all practical purposes, the victory was indecisive given the fact that only half a point separated the top-four powerhouse corps, who evenly split the four caption honors among them.
Star won the brass caption with crystal clear execution of their difficult British book over a supercharged Blue Devil horn line. The excellent community and fan support evident in the stands provided just enough momentum to push the corps past the other leaders. The Dargason production is obviously the centerpiece of this lavish British pageant, framed by the near impossible charts of Henry V and the closing strains of the familiar Crown Imperial. Visually, the corps covers almost every square inch of the field yet does not seem hurried in doing so. The signature star burst forth from the field with perfect linearity. No question now Ñ the mature corps has its sight set dead on the DCI title. 89.50. |

The Star of Indiana has made another drastic change, but once again are more than capable of pulling it off. Their new British style reminds me of the Guardsmen and the 27th Lancers. Fantasia on the Dargason highlights the show, and the horns are incredible as the groups play and march at different tempos. After winning prelims and beating Phantom for the first time this year, they dropped to second in finals with a score of 92.00. |

Star of Indiana absolutely wowed the fans with their stupendous sound. Celebrating their fifth season, this corps pulls out all the stops to create a beautiful, cohesive production. The obviously educated crowd recognized the British melodies, and Fantasia evoked clapping and toe-tapping. The drum line sounded great, scoring 14.4 to Vanguard's 14.5 and the Cadets' 14.3. GE numbers were down, finishing well more than a point behind SCV and 0.9 behind the Cadets. If those numbers improve to match the performance scores, Star could easily find themselves fighting for this championship. The uniform met with mixed reactions, but it perfectly compliments their style. The amazing, consistent growth of this relatively young group is staggering. |

Star of Indiana scored a 93.10 for a one-point advantage over the second-place Cadets of Bergen County. The total GE score accounted for the difference. In each of the performance captions, Star had a matching set of 13.70s. Their only second-place caption finish was in visual performance which was topped by the Cadets.
As the last performer, the Star of Indiana entered the field to a hushed anticipation from the audience, that turned to cheers once the show began. The Greensleeves closer was as loud as one would think a corps could play, and then the horn line added more and then more again. This show ran so smoothly, it was over before you knew it. |

Star of Indiana had beaten Cadets just the night before. They placed second tonight in all sub-captions except GE brass which they won. Their British production came across with a sense of obvious raw power, yet was controlled and beautifully artistic. The company front push in Fantasia on the Dargason hit the audience with as much power as a corps can produce. The regal and majestic Crown Imperial topped off the program with dignity and traditional drum corps "oomph." Star appears to be having their best year to date. |

Star of Indiana achieved their highest competitive finish to date, placing sixth with a score of 95.30. High execution levels in their British-styled product gave the show a uniquely regal flavor. The selections of Henry V and Crown Imperial brought back memories of the same music performed in past championships by the Guardsmen and the 27th Lancers and acted as a fitting tribute to these once great corps. Star deserves speical mention for the unequaled beauty of the silks used by their color guard. Their exceptional radiance added just the right pallet of colors to this memorable all-English pageant. Star's commitment to an English repertoire has filled a void left unattended for a half-decade. |
