Drum Corps Midwest (DCM) Tour
Indianapolis, IN
| |
Of the hundreds of British repertoire selections available, the Star of Indiana has saddled their entire 1990 field show with William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast. Barely British at all, this massive choral composition has necessitated yet another uniform change for the corps. Gone is most of the classy British uniform of 1989, hidden by a Roman shoulder overlay and purple sash. The corps is topped off with chrome Trojan helmets and matching gauntlets. Not to be outdone, the guard is attired in what is best described as a cross between Guenivere and the queen in Snow White, with huge flowing capes that just ooze purple.
Star's drill is obviously Zingali designed, including a new routine "materializing from nowhere" company front at the end. Walton's Belshazzar's Feast is notoriously difficult and translates to the drum corps arena with equal demand placed on the brass. Star landed in third in that caption, second in percussion but equally distant from Phantom in the breakdowns. Prepare yourself to yet again reacquaint yourself with the Star of Indiana and their brand of British? Regal revelry. Second place, 68.30.

Rousing the audience right from the start, Star of Indiana, from Bloomington, IN, presents a feast for the senses which doesn't let up until they leave the field! A rich appearance with purple draped over red tops, white trousers on the musicians, purple capes on the guard and lots of sparkling sequins on everyone, makes Star SHINE this year!
Presenting Sir William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, Star opened with a great blended horn sound that was "ethereal" and stirred the crowd emotionally and, when their guard created even more flash at a powerful buildup near the start, the crowd roared and yelled louder. A great feature using two major forms, a circle and a square, visually portrayed the use of two tunes with strong visuals that contrasted and enhanced each other. Using controlled horn power in flowing drills as the guard used golden chalices, Star whipped across the field for a very fast ending to the first segment.
The next segment opened with a large orange sign saying "Mene . . . Mene . . . Mene . . . " and the guard used golden plates as the drill forms featured gorgeous rotations that fit the music like a glove. The third segment started very fast, included a fine drum solo and lots of varied tempos. After that they went into a very slow section ending in a curved choir formation that fit the super slow chorale ending.
Star's final segment had the full corps moving rapidly all over the field while playing intricate and beautiful music. Just before the show ending, all elements suddenly converged into a large star before moving rapidly again into a very dazzling finish. The audience jumped to their feet screaming and Star made a lot of new fans tonight! With many execution problems still to be worked out, the exciting Star of Indiana scored 66.90 for second place.

Star of Indiana took the field with a uniform that is based on last years', but would not be recognized as such if you weren't told so. The color guard was clad in long, purple robes with gold crowns, while the corps proper wore a purple sash, red capes and lots of sequins everywhere. Their show for 1990 is Belshazzar's Feast. It is based on an Old Testament story taken from the Book of Daniel. Elegant, explosive, fast and flowing are some of the words that come to mind in trying to describe their show. The drill had many high-speed moves that, when they start to click later in the season, are going to be phenomenal to watch. Multiple colored flags were used to create a stained glass effect in the later moments of the production. This program will delight and excite many fans this summer.

Star of Indiana's famed concrete wall of sound dominated the brass caption and pushed the corps past the Cavaliers' equally-impressive thundering percussion, decisively winning the first Lincolnland Drum and Bugle Review.
The fire is red hot at Belshazzar's Feast. Star of Indiana gained nearly six points since their initial outing in Indianapolis and proved all the skeptics wrong about their avant garde repertoire selection. Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin!, a statement unveiled on fabric at the four-minute mark provides a backdrop for the corps, uniforms adorned in the most glitter to ever grace a football field. Translated off the walls of Babylon by Daniel (in the Old Testament), this means "God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end", in reference to King Belshazzar, son of Nebuchadnezzar.
Star has added large, piercing chimes and bells that both herald the coming production and close the program. The horn line outdistanced the Cavaliers by a solid point and a half, backed by a nearly one-point margin in visual as well. Note should be made of the impressive "sliding step" in sync with the clashing tempos of the closer, a furious tour-de-force of drill and music during the final minute. With props kept to a bare minimum, the individual excellence shine through a unified whole. No premature predictions hereÑthis lavish pageant could propel Star of Indiana into the top three: feast on the richness of the horn arrangements and the crispness of the percussion, see the tables adorned with flowing silks, this is creme de la creme corps! First place, 74.40.

Bloomington's Star, resplendent in re-worked uniforms of red, purple, white and silver, is keeping in the top six hunt with a literal musical reading of Belshazzar's Feast. An interpretive and exciting visual program offers fans familiar with the work symbols of the narrative story.
Star's talented percussion and horn lines are tackling the multimetered, exuberant score with the power and sustained lines the corps has developed over its short history. Star's feet are performing George Zingali's dizzying drill with aggression and stamina, both strongly needed to drive home the electrifying general effect moments of the production.
Utilizing richly colorful and often symbolic props, Star's guardÑeven with its somewhat incomplete show - is providing solid visual support to the program. The spectacularly ceremonial guard costumes are the perfect counterpart to the corp's sparklmg uniforms.
Star was an overwhelming first, with a score of 78.00.

Tonight's big news was the continued domination of the Cadets of Bergen County by the Star of Indiana who swept into town last night in Hershey handling the Cadets their first east coast loss. With a score of 82.20 tonight, the Star of Indiana bested last nights' score by three-tenths and the Cadets by 2.3 points. Belshazzar's Feast is everything you've heard about and more.
Spectacular, powerful, exquisite all describe the total sound and look that Star portrays this year. A wall of brass, added to a complex percussion book, equals a fire and brimstone show that literally brings down the wrath of God. Even the drill is exciting as lines sweep down into and through the open pit area. After seeing the show the last two nights, our bet goes with top three for this show if they continue to clean it to perfection.

With a score tonight of 87.70, Star of Indiana's production of William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast is a massive enterprise with much more glitz and glamour than was shown in last year's British theme show. Without going into detail here, I'm told that reading the Book of Daniel, Chapter Five, in the Bible will help explain this elaborate presentation.
Grandiose costuming, including royal purple capes lined with wide red and gold stripes for the guard and sequined collars and silver helmets for the corps proper, takes the crowd's breath away as Star announces their presence on the starting line. The full-bodied brass line and stunning percussion section comes to life at the bidding of Ashley Tappen, Star's graceful, yet commanding, drum major.

Star of Indiana (God's corps for 1990) filled the stadium with ultimate pageantry and regal colors of red, purple, gold and silver. Sir William Walton's Belshazzar's Feast is based on the fifth chapter of Daniel in the Bible. In the story, a mysterious writing appears on the walls of the palace and scares King Belshazzar half to death. He calls in Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall Ñ MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. It means "God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." It looks like the prophetic Star of Indiana is serious about knocking the Vanguard off of the DCI throne. Compared to Santa Clara's show, Star is marching two in terms of difficulty. Star won brass by 0.3, visual by 0.3 and tied with Vanguard in percussion with 17.6. The sound of the horns and drums can best be described as nuclear.
Watch for the four stars, one after the other and the out-of-nowhere company front at the end. Could this be the surprise champion of 1990? God only knows!

Star of Indiana looks incredible under the lights. The glitter that they have simply has to be seen to comprehend. Star is doing a show that is very unusual, but they are able to perform it well. The brass line is excellent. They have a deep and mature sound that is not often heard in the activity. The music is rich and full of dissonance which really shows their depth. Star took the visual caption and tied for high brass with Santa Clara. Second place with a 90.90.

No stars shown in the overcast as Star of Indiana came on the field after intermission. Rain paused as the pit set up and the corps entered the field. The organ sound of Star's opener seemingly beaconed the sky to clear and "star" appeared. The fast-moving drill woke up the crowd as the second piece ended and the mellow, nontranslatable "Mene, Mene, Tekel . . ." sign appeared. After a spectacular show the night before in Bloomington, the brass held its edge and showed excellent dynamics. Star is definitely ready for Buffalo as they intrigue the crowd with a flowing movement and smooth delivery dosing to a standing ovation.

Star of Indiana, from Bloomington, IN, came on strong the last two weeks, winning the DCI Mid-America regional, then at championships placing fourth in quarter-finals and semi-finals before improving to a solid third in finals.
Presenting a truly spectacular musical and visual show. Star opened with an ethereal fanfare of chilling dissonance. Using Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, filled with musical splendor, they presented a non-literal program about a pagan feast, a sense of loss and foreboding, then a renewed commitment to good. The visuals were as wonderful as the music. Lots of purple, gold, red, silver, chrome, sequins, spangles and more. Star's exciting drill had the crowd gasping as they rushed around the field with seeming abandon in many parts of their show.
Star's breathtaking and challenging production is the most daring project they've tedded in their short fiveyear history. During mid-show, they successfully present a somber ominous, contemplative mood. Strong solos and ensembles enhance each number. The show's finish is a true whirlwind of movement and happier music as Star winds up with a rousing ending of joyous emotions captured in music and movement. A grand presentation in the full meaning of the word.
Star won the high brass award, placed third in general effect and percussion and fourth in color guard and visual (tied). Attaining their highest placement ever at DCI, the glittering Star of Indiana placed third in finals with 96.50.
