From The 1991 Drum Corps International Championship Program:
They knocked everyone's eyes out last year, with incredibly quick drill evolutions that stunned and amazed. They blew everyone's ears out last year, with a horn line that walked away with the top honors. Their uniforms glistened like the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. Star of Indiana created an awesome spectacle, and they enjoyed it so much they decided to create another one for their sixth season, titled, "Roman Images." The music for this "event" is largely based on Ottorino Respighi's "Pines of Rome" and "Roman Festivals."
"Circus Maximus" opens the show with a magnificently ostentatious and brazen fanfare, announcing the arrival of the great archers (the sports superstars of the day), as they entered the arena to clamorous acclaim. "Villa Borghese" paints quite a different image, light-heartedly depicting the play of children amidst a grove of towering pines. With the brass displaying an impressive arsenal of advanced techniques, they capture the exuberance of the children.
Religious images are then explored, extracted from various Respighi works. Mournful psalms can be heard rising from the depths of the catacombs, as church bells resonate across the horizon. "Epiphany" quickly develops to the final climax, accelerating to a dizzying pace while drill forms emerge for a brief second and just as quickly dissolve. The astonishing last minute sets a record for the number of evolutions that are compressed into a finale of blinding speed and intensity.
